.TCM Oral Liquid Membrane Filtration & Clarification Technology
Background Introduction
TCM oral liquid inherits the technological characteristics of TCM injections. It is produced by further refining, concentrating, filling, sealing and sterilizing traditional Chinese medicine decoctions. TCM oral liquid features small dosage, fast absorption, stable quality, convenient carrying and administration, and easy storage, and is especially suitable for industrial production.
In the general preparation process of TCM oral liquid, a TCM extract is obtained by decoction. After proper concentration of the extract, a certain proportion of ethanol is added to remove most non-medicinal components such as gelatinized starch, tannins, proteins, resins, grease and mucilage. Appropriate additives (commonly including flavoring agents, bacteriostats, antioxidants and colorants) are then added for dissolution and mixing, followed by clarification and filtration. Finally, the liquid is filled and sealed in packaging bottles and sterilized in accordance with injection production process requirements to obtain finished products.
Problems of Traditional TCM Oral Liquid Production Technology
Traditional processes adopt ethanol precipitation combined with plate-and-frame filtration or centrifugation. Although these methods can remove most non-medicinal components including gelatinized starch, tannins, proteins, resins, grease and mucilage, they suffer from low filtration precision and incomplete impurity removal due to the limitations of traditional filtration technologies. Fine suspended impurities and soluble impurities can penetrate the filter layer and easily flocculate and precipitate after sterilization, resulting in poor finished product quality and short shelf life.
Application of Membrane Separation Technology in TCM Oral Liquid Production
With years of practical experience serving pharmaceutical enterprises and professional advantages in membrane separation technology, BluewavBio has successfully applied membrane separation technology to the production process of TCM oral liquid. Based on the selective sieving principle of membranes, the technology intercepts macromolecular impurities while allowing effective TCM ingredients to pass through, solving the clarification and filtration difficulties of TCM oral liquid. The processed oral liquid remains clear and transparent after filling, sealing, sterilization and long-term storage, with no visible foreign matters detected in lamp inspection and excellent color and luster.
